By PC Steve - While tornado chasers get the publicity, powder chasing has become a new gig for many die hard obsessive weather warriors like me who strive to grab the deepest days of the season, even if it takes playing hookey from work. My strategy? Grab the powder while fresh and arrive the evening before the storm or in some cases storm ski, drive eight hours, and catch the same dumpage again in another state. Last season I was blessed with a two-foot dump at Crystal Mountain, flew to Snowbird for the same storm with goals of the powder trifecta by driving to Colorado and catching the same storm on day three. Conditions were so good in the Wasatch that I ended up staying a few days.

The epic chase for powder continues as I stabbed 1st Chair at Wolf Creek today with over a foot of fresh from last night and an additional 6 inches during the day today. Storm totals so far at Wolf Creek are in excess of 20 inches with very low water content. Light to moderate snow bands will occur until midnight with the possibility of another 2-5 inches in the Southern San Juan Mountains tonight. The next storm will usher in sub zero temperatures on Sunday night and Monday with a fast moving cold front which should lay down 2-5 inches near Winter Park and Loveland and the possibility of 4-6 inches at Eldora near Boulder by Monday morning. Summit County will also see light snow begin Sunday night. The Southern San Juan Mountains will see moderate to heavy snow on Monday however mostly on the Eastern side of the Divide!
The week ahead looks fairly tranquil for the Northwest, Sierra, and Wasatch however another cold front will brush by Montana, Eastern Wyoming, and most of Colorado on Thursday night and Friday with amounts in the 3-7 inch range possible. Unfortunately most of the snow will be light.
