December 2, 2011 - 7:41 amSouthern Colorado – 9 to 11 Inches

Moisture moving into Southern Colorado will make the chase likely for Wolf Creek for Saturday morning where 3-4 inches overnight and another 4-8 will fall during the day. Snowfall should end up near 9-11 inches by the end of the day.

Other areas to follow this weekend will be Loveland and A Basin where a less impressive storm will drop 3-5 inches for opening lifts on Monday. Most areas East of Vail will recieve snow for Monday!

November 29, 2011 - 9:44 pmFront Range of Colorado

The Chase will be on for the Front Range of Colorado!  Moderate snows Wednesday night will graze the mountain Ski resorts closest to Denver for Thursday Powder.  Amounts will vary between 3-9 inches with the highest amounts expected at Eldora, Winter Park, Loveland, A Basin and perhaps Keystone.  Highest amounts should be over Eldora.

Very cold temps and strong winds could affect lifts Thursday morning.  Density will be very light however at this time of year wetter is better for base!

November 22, 2011 - 7:58 amThe Chase!

This weeks chase will include Whistler, Mount Baker, Crystal Mountain as more snow continues to pound these resorts with heavy wet snow turning lighter by Wednesday morning!  Whistler has seen over 60 inches of POW in the past 7 days and might be a good pick for this upcoming weekend!  Blackhomb opens on November 24th so that would be my first pick as you can dream about virgin runs for the year in fresh snow!  Have fun and stay tuned for more on the chase!

November 16, 2011 - 8:53 amTHE CHASE!!

The chase this week will include the Northwest on Friday for a hopeful opening of Mount Baker and Crystal Mountain where 11-18 inches of new snow will have fallen in the past 24 hours making for some limited terrain of powder skiing.  The Saturday chase includes Snowbird where they open from top to bottom skiing and an expected 9 inches from the night before. It will be snowing at the Bird all day on Saturday

The Sunday chase might take me back to Colorado where resorts there especially Steamboat will see good snows from Saturday with some lingering into Sunday!

Stay tuned for updates.

November 15, 2011 - 7:08 amPowder Forecast- Heavy Snow returns to the West

Update:  November 15th 7am

The West coast is showing lots of activity in the next 10 days of which the first of a series of moist systems will move into the Northwest Cascades by Wednesday night  bringing up to a foot of new snow above 5,000 feet by Thursday evening. Snow levels will remain high in the Cascades until late Thursday when a cold front lowers snow levels to just 500 feet!  That could bring some snow to the hills just outside of Seattle! LIght density snow will best on Friday!

The cold front rapidly moves through the Northwest into the Sierra and Tetons by Friday morning and into the Wasatch by Friday evening. Heavy snow will break out in many areas along and behind the front making epic openings for many resorts that plan on season openings this weekend! The Northern Sierra, Tetons, Wasatch, and Colorado mountains will all get into the action.

Colorado will start to see snow in many mountain areas by late Friday night or early Saturday. Amounts at this point appear to be in the 7-14 inch range however as we get closer an update will be posted.  Moisture increases again by Thanksgiving and continues into the following weekend!  Please post your Powder Buzz below!  We need your input.

November 13, 2011 - 6:25 amCHASE IS ON!

Update November 13, 6:30 AM

Jackson would be the ultimate hit if you are looking for some back country with over 12 inches in the past 24 hours and light snow still falling in the Tetons.  My pick for resorts this moring is Solitude Utah where 6 inches fell yesterday and another 4-8 will fall this morning before 1PM.  Snow will break out again in Colorado by 2 PM where another 4-7 inches is expected along I-70 so the chase Monday will be Copper Mountain, or Loveland who also recieved light to moderate snow yesterday.   See you on the slopes.

November 11, 2011 - 7:15 pmTHE CHASE

With limited resorts open I might elect to stay in the Backcountry in the Wasatch on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning however strong winds will create significant drifting and AVY danger. The winds are from the Southwest early in the storm making the deepest Utah snow likely in Big Cottonwood Canyon versus Little Cottonwood.  In Colorado the chase would inlclude any open resorts along I-70 with a bit of an edge going to Copper mountain due to the Northwest Winds!  The best day to ski there will be Sunday and again Monday (2nd impulse) which might even be better.  The early winds are from the SW on Saturday night so most of I-70 might not see heavy snow until later in the weekend when everything shifts to the Northwest and I-70 will be dumping. The Northwest will get a good punch of powder for the next several weeks so expect resorts there to open by Thanksgiving.

November 8, 2011 - 7:57 amChase Time!

Head to Wolf Creek Colorado where they just hit 100 inches year to date and 100% open!

Next weeks chase might include the Wasatch (Even thought resorts are not open yet) as a decent looking front is setting up for Monday/Tuesday as well as the Northwest!

Stay tuned for the chase outlook as resorts open we will narrow down the best snow day by day.

November 7, 2011 - 9:41 pmStorm Update!

Updated 11/7 at 9.30 PM

The latest storm to lay down almost a foot of new snow in many areas in the Sierra is now over Eastern Colorado producing white out conditions on the plains however for you powderchasers there will be fresh snow to be had at Wolf Creek (4-7 since the lifts closed and over 2 feet this week), and a good dosing of deep snow over northern New Mexico, and Flagstaff AZ.  The next low pressure should move into the Northwest this weekend and into the Rockies by late Sunday/Monday bringing a moderate amount of snow to many areas. It appears to be a fairly fast moving system but stay tuned for details as the models bring us closer to next week. Please stay tuned to updates on Facebook and the Powder Buzz section below for day to day updates.

November 6, 2011 - 5:09 am10 Day Powder Forecast!

Updated at 4am on November 6th

Heavy snow will blast the Sierra today (10-15 inches expected over 7,000 feet) and a band light snow will continue over central Colorado this morning after a good 7-10 inches has fallen in many areas (Aspen, Vail Pass,, Silverton) according to snowtel sites and observations. Wolf Creek is reporting 12 inches new and 95% open!  Light to moderate snow will break out over the 4 corners of Colorado late tonight into Monday bringing additional accumulations to Northern Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern Colorado by late Monday (4-7).

The big news is that the Northwest gets very active by Friday next week and the models are showing moderate to heavy precipitation and very cold air moving down the coast by next Saturday into the Central Sierra of California, and eventually into Utah and Colorado over the weekend. The path at this point looks to favor Central California, Northern Washington, British Columbia, and eventually a good portion of Utah and Colorado (South might be favored?). It looks like moisture might continue over the Rockies into the beginning of the following week. The Pacific Northwest might see snow in the foothills by Saturday!

Please keep the Powder Buzz Going and get psyched for more snow and what appears to be a great start to the 2011-2012 season. The chase will start soon! Please post your observations.
