Active week ahead will bring moderate snow to the Northern Rockies on Wednesday/Thursday and perhaps heavier snow this weekend favoring south where over 3 feet accumulated last weekend. Aspen, Wolf Creek, Silverton, Crested Butte all saw the best freshies of the year with over 40 inches of deep over a 3 day period. Face shots were plentiful! My chase took me to Aspen Highlands where they saw 3 powder days in a row and storm totals in the 30 inch range.

Overview:  Snow will break out in the Sierra late Tuesday night and continue into Wednesday (8-11 inches). The Wasatch will see heavy snow after 11am on Wednesday continuing into Thursday morning (9-12 inches) in a classic Northwest flow which will finally give the Cottonwoods something to smile about. The Tetons and adjacent Idaho resorts will see moderate snow by Wednesday afternoon.  Most of the Colorado mountains will see snow Wednesday night into

Powder Alert Update

UPDATE on current Powder Alert:

Snow will continue over the next 48 hours especially in southern and central Colorado with periodic heavy bands tonight and tomorrow morning. Utah will miss out on the deep but should see 2-5 inches by Sunday afternoon. Silverton Mountain has already seen over 2 feet in the past 24 hours with Aspen and areas along the I-70 corridor in the 8-12 inch range. Most of the snow has stayed on the Western Corridor so Summit County has stayed out of the deep however that will change by Monday. Radar is still brining heavy snowbands into Colorado with the south and central zones favored.

I would expect 6-9 inches additional in the Aspen area tonight and Sunday morning with higher amounts further south! Crested Butte has received over 15 inches thus far and will continue to see snow tonight.

Front Range Colorado?  Cold air will begin to move into the State late on Sunday and early Monday bringing a high chance of decent accumulations for

As I mentioned last week the cumulative events of several disturbances in the northern Rockies will finally provide significant snowfall for areas that have not seen deep snow in several weeks. The pattern during Olympic week will favoring the northern Rockies during the 7 day period with the heaviest dumps this weekend followed by another

If we are going to talk about deep snow you might have to look East this week as another powerful storm is going to drop another 12-20 inches over the Mid Atlantic Seaboard in the next 24-36 hours! According toKevin Witt from the National Weather Service in Virginia "there has been 60.4 inches of snow recorded at the airport in Baltimore (BWI) this season" which is almost 500% above average and the next storm is going to push those numbers even higher!  The annual average snowfall in Denver is 61 inches so the East Coast is about to exceed the total seasonal amounts of the West where year to date in Denver there has been a healthy 41 inches (well above normal).

Last weekends storm took the typical El Nino route sending the low pressure even further South giving southern CA resorts such as Mammoth as well as New Mexico Taos nearly 20 inches of snow by Sunday afternoon. Silverton Resort was blessed with another 10 inches of low density snow which sent my chase to the lifts there on Sunday morning. Silverton is a treat since at this time of year it is restricted to guided skiing only where groups of 8 tackle some of the best vertical of Colorado on areas that are hand picked for the day and almost always covered in the deep! The rewards of untracked snow only come with some pretty extensive hiking above 12,000 feet and after 5 runs you will smile with exhaustion. It is well worth the trip especially for the backcoutry experience and steep terrain.  Even the optional box lunch was homemade turkey cooked in Silverton the night before! They are only open Thursday-Sunday so the powder stays fresh but forewarned this is not for the fair weather gapers.

Powder Outlook for the West:

After a fairly quiet week with the exception of over a foot of new snow in the Wasatch last Sunday/Monday and up to 9 inches at Grand Targhee  this morning  it appears that the pattern should bring snow to most areas  by this weekend especially late Saturday through Monday. The moisture that blessed the Wasatch last weekend fizzled as it  hit Colorado and totally blew my powder alert for the northern mountains! Monday was deep at Snowbird as the snow report of 3 inches turned into 12-15 with areas not opened from the previous day!

Light snow will begin in the Sierra by Thursday night and gradually turn heavy by Friday night/Saturday (Saturday would be the perfect day there with low snow levels). In the Rockies, light snow should be numerous on Saturday morning and will eventually turn heavy late
