Powder Warnings - Colorado, Utah & Wyoming
Heavy Powder Warning extended for an epic 3 days!
Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:35
Utah! The deepest snows will be favored in Utah on Tuesday-Wednesday (Very heavy snowfall during the day Tuesday) and eventually picking up in Colorado by Noon on Tuesday. The Deepest day in Colorado will be on Wednesday where the Central and Northern Mountains will see an excess of 15 inches. Either Tuesday or Wednesday will be epic in the Wasatch (Snowbasin will initially do better than most with the SW flow). Utah should see from 15-26 inches!  (Medium to heavy density turning very light by Tuesday Noon).

Snow may continue in Colorado through Wednesday Night making for another decent day on Thursday however most of the storm will be East of the Rockies by early Thursday morning.  Sure Bets?  1) Anywhere in Utah on Tuesday/Wednesday  2) Vail/Steamboat/Beaver Creek on Tuesday Afternoon and Wednesday (Aspen will do well earlier with the SW flow on Tuesday morning).

Heavy Powder Warning
Sunday, 15 February 2009 08:23
Heavy Snow over the past 48 hours has left up to 15 inches in most of the Utah Mountains (Park city being the winner) and nearly 8 inches in the Steamboat and Vail areas as of 6am this morning. Skies will clear in all areas today before the next and largest of the group of storms this week moves on shore into California where 3-4 feet of new snow will fall there by Tuesday.

Light to Moderate snow will begin in both Utah and Southern Colorado late Monday night with strong winds and Southwest Winds. A sharp cold front will slam into Northern Utah Tuesday morning turning snowfall rates very heavy during the day inches per hour) making this to be the storm ski pick of the week (Utah Mountains). The snow will continue into Tuesday night however moderating somewhat as the bulk of the moisture will be overhead in the Colorado Central and Northern Mountains. Colorado should see snowfall increase by Noon on Tuesday however may benefit better in the evening making Wednesday a good pick for all resorts favored by Westerly Flow. My pick of the week there will be Steamboat on Wednesday where over a foot should be reported on Wednesday morning. Beaver Creek and Vail will also benefit highly. All resorts will receive snow from this storm. High winds could be an issue with this one and avalanche danger will rapidly rise.

This is the last in the series of storms this week but should deliver the highest snowfall rates (18 inches plus in the Wasatch on Tuesday, and 9-15 inches in Colorado by Wednesday).

The next chance of snow may come on Sunday/Monday next week but at this point it does not appear to be all that impressive.

Enjoy the POW and plan your work week accordingly.

Extended Powder Warning!
Thursday, 12 February 2009 19:22
This week saw very high accumulations across Southern Colorado (2-3 Feet) and the Northern Wasatch of UT (2 feet) however unfortunately most of Central Colorado got blocked from the SW flow (Mountains blocking the moisture from getting up to the I-70 corridor) with the exception of Steamboat where 15 inches fell in wrap around moisture extending in a line from Rifle up through Craig with a SW wind flow. The end result is both Northern Utah and Steamboat can benefit from both Southwest wind patterns as well as the favored direction of Northwest! Those are powder junkies picks since they tend to benefit from both directions.

The next series of storms start out fairly weak with a gradual increase over the next 5 days. Here is how it sorts out with generally a tricky pattern to predict exact storm paths but generally most of the POW will be favoring the Central Mountains of Colorado versus Northern Utah until Monday/Tuesday when the largest of the series of storms enters the Rockies.

Thursday Night/Friday:  Light snow for Northern Utah and Moderate snow for Central Colorado (3-6 Utah/4-9 Colorado). My estimate is that the storm will track right over The Grand Mesa and give a good shot to Aspen/Vail/and YES Loveland should finally see some new snow by Friday morning. All snow ends by Noon on Friday.

Friday Night/Saturday: Similar patten develops with moderate snow expected for Northern Utah (3-9 inches) and another 3-7 inches for Colorado (Colorado snow to develop at sunrise on Saturday).

Sunday  Calm before the storm so rest up for what comes next  (2 feet expected in the Sierra on Sunday if you feel like driving?)

Monday/Tuesday  Heavy snow (12-18 inches) for the Cottonwoods and a good chance of a foot or more for many areas in Colorado by Tuesday morning.  I will put out a broadcast as we get closer to this large scale event which will also bring strong winds and medium density snow to most areas.

Enjoy the POW!

Moderate Powder Warning

Update to add Moderate to Heavy snow to Colorado Southern Mountains as well as the Wasatch of Utah

Heavy snow will break out as expected over the San Juan Mountains tonight with light to moderate snow in the North. Winds will shift to the NW during the day Monday with light to moderate snow along the I-70 corridor and into Monday Night (4-7 inches).  Heavy snow will break out in the Wasatch of Utah Monday afternoon and continue through Tuesday morning with a cold NW flow. Accumulations in the Cottonwoods will exceed 12 inches by Tuesday morning with up to 18 inches in some locations.  (Storm Ski Monday PM and epic deep on Tuesday).

Colorado will most likely see moderate snow early Tuesday morning before it tapers off in the afternoon (Tuesday should be the best day to ski) I would expect Aspen to receive from 6-10 inches and areas further North lesser amounts.

The next storms are on track to affect the mountains on Thursday and again Saturday/Sunday.

7 Day Powder Forecast (POW AT LAST)
Written by Powderchaser Steve
Friday, 06 February 2009 13:12
As hoped for snow finally came back into the picture with up to 10 inches over the Wasatch on Friday and a series of low pressure systems expected over the next 7 days. The storm track will favor the Southern Mountains through the period however Northern areas could see moderate snow by Monday and Tuesday.  The Southwest flow favors places like Crested Butte, Silverton and Wolf Creek but my suspicion is that Aspen will do fairly well (Monday/Tuesday might be the best of picks) as well as the Wasatch for a long duration of light to moderate snow. If you want super deep this weekend then head to Silverton Colorado (a sure bet)  but by Monday afternoon I think most areas will see a decent shot of powder as the storm tracks to the North.  The next best chance of heavy snow in the Wasatch will be on Monday PM/Tuesday.

Amounts will be in excess of 24 inches in the South however over a long duration since the storm center is going to move very slowly over the next 3 days. Northern UT will see at least 6-8 inches over the next 2 days and most likely more by Monday afternoon.  The I-70 Corridor will most likely not see heavy snow however by Monday/Tuesday will likely see moderate amounts.

Wednesday-Sunday Outlook:

Wednesday should see a break in the action however short lived where a better looking storm will come into the Rockies starting on Thursday afternoon and another even better looking one for Saturday and Sunday next week (Colder system). both of these systems might be better for the North!

Enjoy the fresh powder and hope to see you on the slopes this weekend!
